The Salt Lake County Justice Court is located in the south building of the Government Center at 2001 S. State Street. It is one of 15 justice courts in the county and serves the citizens living in the unincorporated county. Judge Holly Barringham has been on the court since 2006 and Judge Shauna Graves-Robertson is the presiding judge and has served since 1999. Juries are also empanelled regularly to decide cases. The court handles class B and C misdemeanors, ordinance violations, infractions, and small claims.
Justice court security is provided by Protective Service Officers. Bailiffs work closely with judges to ensure safe and secure courtrooms, while court security officers control access to the court and patrol the surrounding area. These officers share responsibilities and implement security similar to the larger district courthouses. All court patrons are subject to search before entering. The security officer uses a magnetometer and x-ray machine to keep weapons and contraband from entering the secure area. Officers also manage a small court holding area where in-custody defendants and witnesses are kept before and after hearings.
