The Scott M. Matheson Courthouse opened in 1998 and is located in downtown Salt Lake City at 450 S. State Street. It contains 28 district and 7 juvenile courtrooms, the Utah Court of Appeals, and the Utah Supreme Court. It also holds the Utah State Law Library, the State Administrative Office of Courts, and numerous programs like Divorce Education and Traffic School.

    
The Protective Services Division has 49 sworn officers that provide court security and bailiff services at the courthouse. Our officers search an average of 3,000 patrons daily for court proceedings that range from ordinary to high risk. We utilize magnetometers, x-ray machines, physical searches, vehicle screening, and full perimeter patrols to ensure a safe working environment. In addition, our officers maintain custody of approximately 100-200 prisoners daily in the court’s holding facility. Lastly, our bailiffs oversee over one hundred cases daily. They provide a direct law enforcement presence inside the courtroom and a major deterrence to criminal activity.
