Citizen's Academy
The new Citizen's Academy began September 10th and runs through November 5th. Classes are held every Wednesday where citizens will learn the different functions of the Sheriff's Office. They take tours through our buildings, have a walk through of the jail and they will sit with dispatch and learn their job. They will also learn firearm safety and other things to help with neighborhood watch. 36 people signed up for the academy this year
Week 1 started with the Sheriff talking to them about what to expect and what he hopes they take away from the class and then they were off to Dispatch where they toured the building and sat with the dispatchers to listen in on radio traffic and learn the job of an emergency dispatcher
Week 2 everyone headed up to the Sheriff's Office range in Parley's where they got to have firearm safety and shoot off a few rounds. Like also got to experience what its like to be tazed.
Week 3 everyone learned about drugs the problems that drugs are on the streets and things to look out for if you come upon something you might think are drugs or drug related. They also had a demonstration involving intoxicated persons. They learned about what alcohol can do to a person, preformed sobriety tests on them and was taught what an officer would look for in an intoxicated person to show that they are under the influence. Each class member was given the chance to preform the sobriety test on an intoxicated person and then list off what the signs were they noticed that made them think they were intoxicated.
Oxbow Jail Open House
On September 20th, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office held an open house at the old Oxbow Jail. We had some of our specialized units out there and welcomed the public and any of the family of the Sheriff's Office employees. This allowed the public to walk throught he Oxbow Jail before tours would be cut off to the public. Provided to the public the capabilities it would have to offer if it were to re-open.
