Red Ribbon Week

October is here and during this month many schools across the nation will Celebrate “Red Ribbon Week”.  The theme for this year is “Drug free is the key” and the designated week is Oct. 19– 30.  Some schools may have planneRed ribbon slogan on dog tagd events during various weeks of October.

Red Ribbon Week is a time to remember those we have lost in the fight against drugs and as a time to pledge to live a safe and drug free life.  It came about as a result of a well known U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Officer, Enrique Camarena, who was working in Mexico in 1985 and was abducted by five men.  His body was later found and he had been tortured, beaten and brutally murdered.  Enrique left behind a wife and three sons.  To honor his memory and to show that they would continue his mission to fight against illegal drugs his friends and neighbors wore red badges of satin.  This campaign spread across the U.S. thus becoming the tradition of wearing and displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of illegal drugs.  In 1988 the National Red Ribbon Week was implemented as a unified and visible commitment towards creating a “drug free America”. Parents can check with their local schools and PTA to see how they can be involved with this effort.
