Investigations Division Award Meeting

             3rd Quarter 2008

In August of 2008, Detective April Morse

and K9 Lacy, participated in a certification

trial along with six other cadaver dog teams

and were the only dog team to successfully

pass the POST certification standards.

Corrections Officer Scott Hutchinson of the Salt Lake County Jail worked closely with Investigations Division Sergeant Jason Jones and Detectives Chad Reyes and Matt Visher in obtaining information in regards to recent local unsolved robberies.  From this inter-agency cooperation, 3 suspects were arrested and charged.  This is a fine example of collaborative efforts by the Corrections and Law Enforcement Bureaus.

In June of 2008 two Ice Cream stores in the Salt Lake Valley were robbed.  Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Metro Gang Unit Detectives Todd Gray, Steve Wozab and Britney Warner responded to both robbery scenes.  After a few leads, a suspect was taken into custody and interviewed and eventually confessed to both robberies.  These detectives should be commended for their part in taking a violent and armed individual off the streets so quickly.

In June of 2008 three people were shot at a saloon in Midvale. The suspect had an extensive violent history including murder.  Though the suspect had painted his vehicle in an attempt to disguise its unique exterior, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Metro Gang Unit Detectives Brett Miller and Todd Gray located this vehicle and then took the suspect into custody.  These detectives understood the importance of removing this very dangerous individual from the streets.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Mark Jarvis and his K-9 partner, Dax along with Deputy Dustin Fowler and his K-9 partner, Zipp, have been instrumental in numerous narcotic search warrants and narcotic traffic stops.  On several occasions, narcotics would not have been located if it was not for the experience of the handlers and their service animals.  Their knowledge, training and relationship with their K-9 are a true asset to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

In August of 2008 Sheriff's Office Metro Gang Unit made a traffic stop.  The suspect did not have ID on him and gave information which subsequently came back as an alias.  Identification Crime Scene Technician Heidi Reynaud, was contacted to do an AFIS check on this individual.

The results did not give a positive ID.  After hours of searching the appropriate files, Heidi found a record of tattoos that matched the suspect perfectly. He had an outstanding first degree felony warrant for Forcible Sexual Abuse and was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office was called on a female victim who had been dragged by a vehicle and sustained severe trauma.  Victim’s Advocate Nubia Pena was dispatched to the hospital and spent hours with the victim and found that the victim had just moved to Utah and had no family or friends in the area. Ms. Pena’s service and dedication as an Advocate, as well as the other Advocates,                                     is greatly appreciated.

Recently the Utah Narcotic Officer's Association and Governor John Huntsman presented a Special Agency Award to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Neighborhood Narcotics Unit.  This Special Agency Award was presented in recognition of their significant participation and outstanding contribution to narcotic law enforcement through teamwork, dedication and service.
