The Salt Lake County Sheriffs Office continues to lead area law enforcement in professional, progressive law enforcement initiatives that provide greater efficiency and resources to it's citizens.
Law enforcement across the Nation is changing in an attempt to embrace community policing concepts that partner with citizens in identifying crime, understanding crime problems and reducing the fear of crime in the neighborhoods.
The Sheriff's Citizen Advisory Board (C.A.B.) is an extension of community policing, operating at a broader, more comprehensive level. Additionally, it interfaces another valuable Office goal of being open and accessible to the public. Together, this truly comprehensive approach is one of the most innovative and progressive in the Nation.
As directed by it's Mission Statement, the C.A.B. consists of citizens selected from throughout the County. They review problems, policies and issues as they effect the Office and the communities. The Board then makes recommendations to the Sheriff and functions as a communications bridge between the Sheriff and the communities.
In addition to monthly Board meetings, members are assigned to each Division of the Office and participate on internal boards and committees in developing policies and reviewing Office operations.
The Sheriffs Citizen Advisory Board is distinguished from other citizen boards by acknowledging up front it's role as an "advisory board" as opposed to a "review board." A review board generally implies having direct authority to discipline, although most review boards only recommend discipline to the Chief Administrator who may approve, modify, or rescind the recommendation.
The Sheriffs Citizen Advisory Board holds the same privileges. Furthermore, they have the purview to request to look at any Office issue and, in more comprehensive fashion, the members are involved in the process as issues develop and as decisions are made.
This Board is an integral part of the Office initiatives on citizen involvement, community policing and openness and accessibility.

Message from the Board:
Dear Citizens,
We would like to take this opportunity to explain the value of this program and to encourage you to participate as a concerned citizen.
We are all concerned with law enforcement issues and the effect crime has on our neighborhoods and the community as a whole. Whether it is the burglary of our car or home, an assault or the drug house down the street, we are all affected by the crime or the fear of crime in our neighborhood.
Now, more than ever, the Sheriffs Office is involving citizens in planning and decision making processes. We need to take advantage of this opportunity and support those issues that affect our safety and property in the Salt Lake valley.
Please get involved! You can participate at a local level. East and West Districts have a C.A.B.. Or you can participate on the Executive Board. Help identify problem areas requiring special police intervention or other action. The Boards also function as a communication bridge between the communities and the Sheriff. Your concerns can be addressed and you can learn what the Office needs from you.
You can be a part of the development of mutual understanding, respect and coordination between citizens and Salt Lake County Sheriffs operations. Join with us in making our communities better.
Sincerely,
Verlan R. Nielsen
C.A.B. Chair
