Southwest Precinct
The Southwest Precinct administrative office is located at 13272 South 5600 West in Herriman. The Southwest Precinct oversees patrol operations for the cities of Herriman, Bluffdale, and the unincorporated areas of Copperton and Southwest Salt Lake County.
This area is one of the fastest growing areas in Salt Lake County with a current population of approximately 30,000 residents.
Geographically, the Southwest Precinct covers approximately 35 square miles of landmass which includes 25 square miles of residential areas, several miles of paved trails, Butterfield, Yellowfork, and Rose Canyons, and the Kennecott Copper Mine.
The Precinct is managed by a Captain, an Administrative Sergeant, a secretary, and nineteen Deputies. Each participating city determines their own number of patrol officers which is then combined with adjacent cities to provide the highest level of service and economies of scale for the residents we serve.
This past year the Southwest Precinct spearheaded the introduction of the prescription drug collection program. This program provides residents the ability to dispose of their unused prescription drug medications safely without contaminating our water supplies. The drop box is located in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Herriman substation in the lobby. Simply bring in the medications and drop them in the box. They are then taken to an incinerator for destruction. This not only helps protect our water sources but also gets these medicines out of the home so that children and youth cannot accidentally or intentionally miss-use them.
The Southwest Precinct also gladly participates in Neighborhood Watch and Community Meetings. We offer Safe Passage, Child Digital Fingerprint and Photo Records, Bicycle Rodeos, DARE, Officer Friendly, and other programs.
Herriman City
Herriman City currently contracts for eleven Deputies who are selected by the City Officials and Southwest Precinct Commander. These officers specifically requested to work in Herriman and strive to provide a personal level of service and professionalism to the residents.
Herriman Deputies are assigned as follows:
One full time COP (Community Oriented Police) Deputy who oversees community relations and events and strives to find long term solutions to problems identified within the city. He is involved in several programs including Neighborhood Watch, Safe Passage, Community Fairs, and Bicycle Rodeos to name a few.
One full time Property Crimes Detective who oversees all investigations related to Burglary, Larceny, Fraud, and Drug Offenses. Other major crime investigations related to persons are handled by our Pooled Services Investigations which work out of the Sheriff’s main office located at 3365 South 900 West.
One Traffic Enforcement Deputy who is dedicated to traffic enforcement functions and is certified to inspect commercial vehicles and respond to citizen complaints on traffic issues in their neighborhoods. Residents who would like a speed trailer placed in their neighborhood to help educate drivers of their speed and the posted speed may do so by contacting the Southwest Precinct Office.
Eight Patrol Deputies patrol and respond to all calls for service in the city. In addition to their patrol vehicles each officer is provided training and access to Herriman City owned resources such as BMW on/off road motorcycles and a Polaris Ranger for patrol of the many trails throughout the city. This program is the first of its kind in the state of Utah.
Bluffdale City
Bluffdale City currently contracts for three and ½ Deputies. Three of these Deputies are assigned to Patrol duties while another Deputy serves as a shared Property Crimes Detective with Copperton and the Unincorporated County. Like in Herriman, major crimes are investigated by our Pooled Services Investigation Units.
The County also provides three Patrol Deputies who work opposite shifts with Bluffdale to provide 24/7 coverage for both Bluffdale City and the Southwest Unincorporated areas.
Copperton and Southwest Unincorporated
Three Deputies patrol Copperton and the Unincorporated Southwest areas of Salt Lake County. These three Deputies also work with Deputies assigned to Bluffdale to provide full coverage to both areas.
Property Crimes are investigated by a detective shared with Bluffdale city who works from the Herriman Substation. Major crimes are assigned to the Pooled Services Investigations Division.
