NPOST (National Police Officer Selection Test) Information
Applicants for Correctional Officer and Protective Service Officer Positions must pass the National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST) with a score of at least 70% on each of the four phases of the test. Your score on the NPOST written test is one of the testing components required to have your name placed on a register; therefore, your scores must be attached to the application or turned in by the closing date of the recruitment at the latest. This requirement applies to law enforcement certified, certifiable, and those who have no law enforcement experience or training. This test is not given by the Sheriffs Office and must be taken at one of the testing centers in Utah that administers the NPOST (see below).
The written test is a multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer test, and is designed to assess the applicant’s skills in the following area:
- Mathematics
- Grammar
- Reading Comprehension
- Incident Report Writing
Because of the time it takes to receive the NPOST test results, applicants who have not previously taken the test are strongly encouraged to take the test as soon as possible. Test results can take 2 – 3 weeks to be mailed to applicant. It is the responsibility of applicants to make certain the Human Resources Department receives their NPOST score with their application.
